Which Types of Fish To Use in Your Small Aquarium
Fish Tanks Direct on Oct 11th 2022
Small aquariums are tanks that hold 20 gallons of water or less, with some micro tanks housing as little as 2.5 gallons. Because of their size, water level parameters such as ammonia, nitrates, pH, and temperature can change rather quickly, meaning that choosing sturdy fish is critical. Surprisingly, certain small fish can be quite hardy for their size, and there are many species to choose from. To help you make your decision, here are a few types of fish that are suitable to house in your small aquarium.
Swordtails
If you’re looking for a colorful fish that’s easy to care for, swordtails are at the top of that list. While they prefer a lot of light with generally soft water, they can thrive in a variety of conditions, and you can even teach them to eat from your hand. However, despite being sociable fish who like to be in groups of at least six, swordtails are also skittish and will hide when startled.
German Blue Rams
German blue rams are a type of peaceful cichlid with bright red eyes and bluish spots dotted all over their bodies. While they’ll behave with most tank mates, they need relatively warm temperatures, preferably 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and need to stay with fish with similar temperaments and needs. If you’re keeping a small tank, you likely won’t have predatory fish in there, so they should thrive with their tank mates without issue.
Chili Rasboras
Chili rasboras are a freshwater species with vibrant red bodies that look almost like little swimming chili peppers, hence the name. These fish also prefer soft water, but they’re more sensitive than swordtails and need specific nitrate and pH levels to be happy and healthy. They’re peaceful bottom dwellers that also like to hide when startled and prefer low light, often disappearing under plants if the light isn’t soft or diffused.
Panda Corydoras
Panda Corydoras are a tiny species of catfish and are peaceful bottom dwellers that prefer cooler temperatures in the low 70s. They love to scavenge for food like most catfish species do—with their tiny whiskers! You just have to ensure enough food reaches the bottom to keep them happy. If you’re successful, you may find some sticky little eggs on the wall of your aquarium.
