Aquarium ballasts play an essential role in your aquarium's lighting setup. Without a ballast, the fluorescent lighting of your aquarium can become vulnerable to overheating and shortages. Not only can an overheated lamp make water evaporate quicker, causing salinity levels to become dangerously concentrated, but it can be dangerous to the overall health and safety of your fish if your lamp shorts and explodes. Most aquarium light ballasts allow you to control the amount of wattage output necessary. And with the current advancement of halide ballasts, your overall lighting system will be more energy efficient and give off much less heat.
