What are Catappa Leaves?

Catappa leaves are leaves of a large tropical tree called Terminalia Catappa. Catappa leaves are also referred to Indian Almond Leaves. This tree can grow up to 130 feet tall and is found in the tropical regions of Asia, Australia, Africa, and South America. The Terminalia Catappa grows best in a sandy soil. The leaves are also called almond leaves, because the kernel of Terminalia Catappa resembles an almond nut.

What are the benefits of Catappa Leaves?

The Catappa Leaves have an antibacterial effect, due to the substances present in the leaves. It has been researched that the substances of the leaves are still present in the water 10 days after addition. The leaves are also seen as food by shrimps and some fish. After the leaves have been in the aquarium for a while and they slowly decay, the fish and shrimp will eat them. It is therefore not necessary to remove the leaves.

What effect will Catappa Leaves have on your aquarium?

Catappa leaves slightly lower the pH of the water and give off a reddish-brown color to the water; this is because the leaves contain tannins. Many aquarists make use of this, as they try to imitate the natural living conditions of the fish as closely as possible. In the natural habitat of many fish, the water is not crystal clear.
